The search for raw materials takes Jason S. Logan around the globe, from lush forests charred by California wildfires to stark marble quarries in Italy. He gathers tree bark, rust dust, strawberries, rocks, flowers, and herbs, and harvests pigments from them to make fine ink used for traditional calligraphy in Japan and caricatures in New York. Logan is a master ink-maker who prefers to work with natural ingredients, and his picky high-end clients (including Margaret Attwood) view him as something of an alchemist. Logan draws his inspiration from ancient history, times when pigments were extracted from insects, snails, and even blood, and when his ink comes alive on paper, these deep memories rise to the surface. The film follows his work, the artists who use his ink, and the world’s fascinating ink-making traditions.
