It was the summer of ‘87 when Hemi Rudner realized that to survive, he had to get out of the kibbutz: Leaving for the big city of Tel Aviv, he took with him his bass guitar, the notebook where he wrote down his songs, and a promise from an 18-year-old guitarist named Asaf Sarig: “When you start a band, I’ll be there.” The hard times that awaited him were nothing like the rock star lifestyle he had imagined, but he refused to give up the dream, and together with Sarig, drummer Asaf Maroz, and another guitarist, Ofir Bar-Ami, Rudner founded Eifo HaYeled. Money was tight, and their first song, recorded during a missile attack, was followed by years of chasing after record labels that seemed to be offering record deals to anyone with a pulse—except them. But with the release of their debut album Zman Sukkar (“Sugar Time”), the four friends became unstoppable and quickly took Israel by storm. Their unique combination of Israeli lyrics and a distinctly international sound created one of the most memorable albums in the history of Israeli rock.
